With tennis’ most sought-after grand slam Wimbledon now in full swing, the attention of the sport’s aficionados will be firmly focused on the unfailingly exhilarating action at the All England Club, which is the venue for the event.

In the men’s event, all eyes will be on the talented and record-breaking Serbian Novak Djokovic, who has unequivocally ruled the roost in the grand slams thus far this year.

Indeed, the Serb who will be seeking a record-extending 24th grand slam trophy at Wimbledon, has been in a rich vein of form this year, which has seen him already brilliantly secure both the Australian Open and the French Open.

Interestingly, despite being the hot favorite for the title, Djokovic will nevertheless not be entering the fray as the men’s world number one in the world tennis rankings.

That honor belongs to the Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcarez, who is the leader of the next generation of upcoming, scintillating youngsters, who are all champing at the bit to rewrite the history books.

This roll call of up and coming talents includes glittering stars such as Norwegian Casper Ruud, African-American Frances Tiafoe and the Danish big-hitter Holger Rune.

However, apart from these young guns, Djokovic will face a stern test of his mettle from older, more seasoned stars such as German Alexander Zverev and Russian Dmitry Medvedev.

With the elite championship having just started, it is still unclear whether any of the aforesaid tennis personages will prove capable of loosening the title from the iron-like grip of Novak Djokovic, who is the defending champion.

That being said, though, whichever way the script unfolds, we should be in for a bona fide treat over the next fortnight.
