Can Team USA accomplish a three-peat?

2nd Gentleman Doug Emhoff meets USWNT Soccer team during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in New Zealand

Billed as the biggest women’s sporting event in history, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is thrillingly living up to expectations.

Indeed, the heavyweights that every team wants to take down a peg or two are Team USA, who have claimed the last two consecutive women’s world cups.

This year, Team USA is a squad featuring a potent blend of youth with experience and several players in the team will be gracing the world cup for the very first time.

With their sights set on accomplishing an unprecedented three-peat of world cup trophies, Team USA got their campaign off to a flying start this year by easily outplaying the hapless Vietnam 3-0 last weekend.

However, in their second Group E encounter against the Dutch, who were losing finalists at the 2019 World Cup to Team USA, the Americans faced their toughest battle of the competition thus far and even trailed the Dutch 0-1 at half-time.

Despite that slight scare, though, Team USA got right back on track in the second half when their inspirational skipper Lindsey Horan nodded home the equalizer.

In the wake of Horan’s leveler, no other player would get on the scoresheet and the pulsating clash would finish with both sides deservingly earning a share of the spoils.

Indeed, Team USA’s 1-all draw with Holland is the first distinct wobble from the Americans at the FIFA women’s World Cup in quite a long while.

And, it sets up a final high stakes Group E clash against Portugal for Team USA, with the latter likely to be the focus of enormous attention following their uncharacteristically disappointing display against the formidable Dutch.
